Bridging FROM Version 1 or Version 2 TO ITIL Version 3

If you already have an ITIL V1 or V2 Qualification (for example: Foundation, Practitioner or Manager’s), the V3 Qualification scheme includes bridging courses to allow you to quickly upgrade your knowledge and certification level.

The ITIL V3 Qualification Scheme is built around 3 levels, and requires people to collect credits as they work towards their ITIL Expert status (shown in black below).

You can see the levels on the diagram below, as well as where the bridging courses fit in and most importantly how many credits they are worth.

ITIL Qualifications Scheme

Already Hold Your ITIL V2 Foundation Certification?

People who need to obtain the ITIL V3 Foundation level certificate and who are currently in possession of a V2 Foundation certificate can now select from two options:

Option 1 - Successfully pass the V3 ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service
Management Examination (with us or another provider)

OR

Option 2 - Successfully pass the V2 to V3 ITIL Foundation Bridge exam (Note: there is mandatory classroom course attendance for this examination – and therefore this course is not offered by ITIL Training Zone).

The ITIL Training Zone Online V3 Foundation Course will prepare you fully for the V3 Foundation exam in a cost effective way, allowing you to take your exam at a Prometric centre {open new window – link to /prometric} of your choice.

Already Have Your ITIL V2 Practitioner Level Certification?

A number of ITIL V2 Practitioner courses are still currently available under the existing V2 Qualifications scheme.

Under the new ITIL V3 Qualification Scheme - the V2 Practitioner qualifications have been assigned certain credits.

The potential possible combinations of current ITIL V2 Practitioner certifications are numerous – so a ‘mapping exercise’ has been completed on the content areas between V2 and V3 Capability subject areas.

The results of this exercise should help you to decide the most appropriate ITIL V3 Capability or Lifecycle modules to add to their individual or organization’s
portfolio.

If you hold one or more of the ITIL V2 Practitioner certifications, you can use these credits towards your ITIL V3 Expert Certification.

bullet-bl22.gifThe following TWO options are therefore open to you: -

1. People who possess a minimum of 12 credits from V2 Practitioner (clustered or single) certifications, will be eligible for the ITIL V3 Manager’s Bridge AND must achieve the following in order to be awarded the ITIL Expert Status: -

a. Complete the ITIL V3 Manager’s bridge course through an accredited training provider and successfully pass the V3 Managers Bridge exam

AND

b. Attend the ITIL V3 Managing Across The Lifecycle course through an accredited training provider and successfully pass the exam

2. Candidates who possess less than 12 credits from ITIL V2 Practitioner (clustered or single) certifications, must: -

a. Complete a balanced selection of accredited ITIL V3 Service Capability or Service Lifecycle modules from an accredited training provider and successfully pass the module exam(s) to attain 17 or more credits

OR

b. Obtain additional credits by achieving additional ITIL V2 Practitioner certifications to attain 12 or more credits (under the V2 Scheme requirements, so long as the certifications remain publicly available) in order to become eligible for the ITIL V3 Managers Bridge Certificate (revisit Option 1 above)

AND

c. Attend the ITIL V3 Managing Across The Lifecycle course through an accredited training provider and successfully pass the exam.

It is also likely that some existing V2 Practitioner holders will wish to proceed into the V3 Service Lifecycle or Capability stream to further enhance their learning.

Already Have Your ITIL V1 or V2 Managers Certification?

In this scenario, you can gain the ITIL V3 ITIL Expert certification by attending an ITIL V3 Manager Bridge course AND successfully completing the Manager Bridge Examination.

The ITIL V3 Managers Bridge course will be available here at ITIL Training Zone, so please check back regularly.

This course covers the subject areas of all five ITIL Lifecycle stages which are new to V3 – as well as the existing subject areas of V2 which have undergone significant change since the introduction to ITIL V3.

Remember, the ITIL V3 Managers Bridge qualification will effectively bridge the gap between the ITIL V1 (or V2) Service Manager Certificate and the ITIL Expert certification in IT Service Management.

This course is only intended for people holding a valid ITIL Manager’s Certificate in IT Service Management based on ITIL versions 1 or 2 – AND those V2 Practitioners who have accrued sufficient credits.

Don’t forget, the online ITIL V2 V3 Managers Bridge Training course is coming here soon.

bullet-bl22.gifITIL V3 Intermediate Training Level

This intermediate stream is a dual stream, divided into either ‘Lifecycle’ or ‘Capability’ courses.

ITIL V3 Lifecycle Training

The ITIL Service Lifecycle series will be of interest to people wishing to obtain knowledge of ITIL V3 practices within the Service Lifecycle context.

The prime focus is the Lifecycle itself, the use of process and practice elements used within it, as well as the management capabilities needed to deliver quality Service Management practices within an organization.

The Service Lifecycle series is focused on each stage of the Lifecycle and ITIL V3 syllabi are matched to each of the five core practice areas.

A certificate exam is given for each module.

The ITIL V3 Lifecycle modules are:
  • Service Strategy
  • Service Design
  • Service Transition
  • Service Operation
  • Continual Service Improvement
Each module of the Lifecycle series covers an introduction to the service Lifecycle, the principles, processes, functions and activities within that stage of the ITIL Service Management Lifecycle, along with technology and implementation considerations.

ITIL V3 Capability Training

The ITIL Service Capability training courses will be of interest to candidates who wish to obtain a deeper level understanding of the ITIL V3 processes and roles.

Attention to the ITIL Service Lifecycle is highlighted as part of the curriculum;
however the primary focus here is: the process activities, effective execution and use of ITIL throughout the Service Lifecycle.

The ITIL V3 Service Capability series is focused on role based clusters in a modular set, each with a certification.

Each cluster contains groupings of processes and roles from within ITIL Service Management, intended to offer people a balanced knowledge of ITIL practices which have direct interaction and dependencies in their daily use.

The capability modules and their respective subject areas are:

Planning, Protection and Optimization
  • Availability Management
  • Capacity Management
  • IT Service Continuity Management
  • Demand Management
  • Risk Management
  • Information Security Management

Service Offerings and Agreements

  • Application Management

Note: As the syllabi for these courses are developed and released - ITIL Training Zone will be offering these through our online training system - so please check back for regular updates.

Managing Across the Lifecycle

The third tier of qualification is Managing Across the Lifecycle.

This certification completes the Lifecycle and Capability streams by focusing on the ancillary knowledge required to implement and manage the necessary skills associated with the use of the Lifecycle practices and
includes:
  • Introduction to IT Service Management Business & Managerial Issues
  • Managing the Planning and Implementation of IT Service Management
  • Management of Strategic Change
  • Risk Management
  • Managerial Functions
  • Understanding Organizational Challenges
  • Lifecycle Project Assessment
  • Understanding Complementary Industry Guidance

These courses build towards achieving your ‘ITIL Expert’ certification.

ITIL Expert Certification

This certification is achieved by accumulating credits through the first three levels of the ITIL V3 Qualifications Scheme.

There is no examination required for this level; however you must achieve 22 credits through a selection of balanced subject areas which represent, and are examined across, the full spectrum of the ITIL Service Management Practice areas.

To achieve your ITIL V3 Expert status you must obtain a minimum of twenty two credits – two of which must be from the Foundation module which is a mandatory first step, and five of which must be from the ‘Managing
Across the Lifecycle’ module - which is the mandatory final course.

You can choose modules from the Capability Stream (4 credits per module) or Lifecycle Stream (3 credits per module) to gain the other 15 credits, but you are expected to choose a balanced programme overall.

Anyone who holds a V1 or V2 Managers Certificate (17 credits) and attends the mandatory ITIL V3 Managers Bridge course and later passes their examination (5 credits) - will also obtain the ITIL Expert certification.

ITIL Masters Level (Formally Known As ‘Advanced Level’)

Finally, candidates can then move from the ITIL Expert level to the ITIL Masters Level certification.

Right now - the ITIL Advanced Level certification is still under development by the APM Group and the ITIL Qualification Board.

The precise details provided in this section are subject to change and will be appended to the Qualification Scheme when this level has been finalized and approved by the ITIL Qualification Board.

The ITIL Masters level of study leads to an ITSM professional Certification.

People who wish to gain their ITIL Masters are required to have achieved the
ITIL Service Management Expert certification AND be able to demonstrate
practical application experience through a peer evaluation scheme.

They will be assessed on the the broader issues of ITSM implementations including, but not limited to: -
