ITIL has been deeply entrenched into the fabric of enterprise IT for some time now, and despite the nascent contrarian opinion every now and then, it’s safe to assume that the framework’s popularity isn’t going to diminish any time soon. In fact, AXELOS is constantly changing and updating their certification courses in order to keep up with the times and shape ITIL’s commonly established principles to govern today’s modern technology and development trends. That said, becoming ITIL certified is a safe bet to stay prepared for the future, and the demand for educated ITIL experts in the fields of incident management, service management, change management and other ITSM related areas are still very high in 2017.
ITIL was first developed by the U.K. Government's Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) in the 1980s as a set of standardized best practices for IT services used in government agencies. From that narrowly focused start, ITIL has been adopted, revised and expanded into a comprehensive framework for managing IT service delivery in companies and organizations of all sizes, across all industries and market sectors.

You have to submit your application to become a Master, and if your application is accepted, you will be required to submit a proposal. If this is successful, you will be required to submit a work package. The final stage of the Master scheme consists of an interview with a panel of assessors and, if successful, you will be granted ITIL Master certification.
However, when it comes to the IT field, getting your ITIL certification is considered to be a very low-risk effort, and many will tell you that you’d be doing yourself a huge disservice to write it off. Certified ITIL professionals are a highly sought-after commodity, and the job market is stable enough where an ITIL v3 certification in any of the higher levels will be in demand for quite a long time.

In July 2013, ownership of ITIL was transferred to AXELOS, which maintains the ITIL framework and accredits training and examination institutes. Hundreds of ITIL Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) are available to deliver training, and ITIL certification exams are administered at the end of a training course or by an Examination Institute (EI), many of which work directly with the ATOs.

ITIL® Foundation has no prerequisite, but every certification afterwards does. ITIL® Practitioner and the ITIL® Intermediates have a prerequisite of ITIL® Foundation. Those taking the ITIL® MALC exam must hold ITIL® Foundation certification and have gained 17 credits throughout the ITIL® scheme by studying ITIL® Foundation and a selection of ITIL® Intermediate qualifications.
