To achieve this certification you should prove your ability in implementing the knowledge in a variety of settings to achieve the expected business outcome. If you are directly involved in planning, managing and operating IT service management functions obtaining this certification demonstrates the knowledge.

That’s one of the reasons why Axelos has a practitioner level where it requires a combination of both practical and theoretical knowledge.  According to Axelos, the ITIL practitioner level  “enables practitioners to not only speak the language of ITIL but be able to translate it and use it in practice”. So, an ITIL certification without the knowledge of how to use it in practice is just a sheet of paper.
The ITIL Foundation course is the entry level certification course for IT Service Management Best Practices training in ITIL Basics. This course covers the latest version of core ITIL best practices presented from a lifecycle perspective. The course introduces the principles and core elements of IT service management (ITSM) based on ITIL. ITIL is comprised of five core publications: Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operations, and Continual Service Improvement, promoting alignment with the business as well as improving operational efficiency.
The new ITIL 4 Foundation which is an update from ITIL v3/2011 was launched on 18 February 2019. ITIL 4 is a new certification scheme that will slowly replace the existing scheme it is based on the transformation to a digital environment. It is designed to offer a clearer career path for professionals from Foundation to higher levels. There is no Bridge exam for current ITIL Foundation holders to ITIL 4 Foundation. Candidates who hold the current ITIL Foundation will need to take the ITIL 4 Foundation to be certified in the new scheme or they would need to accumulate 17 ITIL v3 credits and then take the transition module.
ITIL Practitioner was added in July 2016 and earns candidates 3 credits toward their ITIL Expert certification. It is considered the next step after the ITIL Foundation, which is a prerequisite. An ITIL Practitioner will be able to explain how to use the ITIL framework to support business objectives, and focuses on organizational change management, communication, measurement and metrics.
ITIL Intermediate: There are two streams in the Intermediate level: the Service Lifecycle Stream and the Service Capability Stream. You can opt to take individual modules within this level, however, if you wish to progress through the ITIL qualification scheme you will need to earn a minimum of 17 credits (two credits must be earned from Foundation) before you can take the Managing across the Lifecycle module and exam. By passing this, you will achieve a total of 22 credits, which you can use towards the ITIL Expert level of certification.
At first glance, software development, or to be more precise, the management of the SDLC (software development lifecycle), may not seem related to ITIL (information technology infrastructure library, or why you need ITIL certification to further a career path that involves software development. However, there are ways that the two approaches are not only compatible but can even be considered two sides of the same coin. The SDLC side is a lifecycle approach to create the product – software. The ITIL side is a lifecycle approach that concentrates on the service. To understand how these two lifecycle approaches integrate, you first have to understand what they each entail.
The ‘Information Technology Infrastructure Library’ is a set of best practices for creating and improving an ITSM process. It is designed to help businesses manage risks, strengthen customer relations, establish cost-effective practices and build stable IT environments for growth, scale and change. In short, an ITIL Practitioner is an expert in continually shaping IT service development processes.

ITIL 2007 edition (previously known as ITIL Version 3) is an extension of ITIL Version 2 and fully replaced it following the completion of the withdrawal period on 30 June 2011.[21] ITIL 2007 provides a more holistic perspective on the full life cycle of services, covering the entire IT organization and all supporting components needed to deliver services to the customer, whereas ITIL Version 2 focused on specific activities directly related to service delivery and support. Most of the ITIL Version 2 activities remained untouched in 2007, but some significant changes in terminology were introduced in order to facilitate the expansion.
The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is the most widely adopted framework of best practices for IT Service Management. As an accredited ITIL Training Provider Approved Training Organization (ATO), Learning Tree offers a complete curriculum of courses that help you gain the knowledge and skills required for specific ITIL Certification exams. Each Learning Tree course offers the related exam in class.
Ahead of your ITIL certification exam online, there are a few things you’ll need to ensure you’re completely prepared. Firstly, some form of photo identification is required. This can be a passport, government ID, or equivalent. The exam must be taken using a PC, preferably running Windows XP or higher, with at least 500MB of RAM. As you will be connected with one of our proctors during the exam, you will need a webcam with 640×800 resolution. A microphone is required, and it’s recommended you have one that is connected with your webcam. You must have authority to grant access to your computer or screen by the proctor. To guarantee everything goes smoothly throughout both the ITIL Foundation Certification Exam and the course, you will need high speed internet (115kps), and your browser must have Adobe Flash Player installed, ideally Flash Player 10.  So long as these requirements are met, you’re good to go! Thought Rock’s ITIL certification exam online is undeniably the most accredited and valuable program on the market, offering the most extensive range of resources for the least expensive price. However, when it comes to the IT field, getting your ITIL certification is considered to be a very low-risk effort, and many will tell you that you’d be doing yourself a huge disservice to write it off. Certified ITIL professionals are a highly sought-after commodity, and the job market is stable enough where an ITIL v3 certification in any of the higher levels will be in demand for quite a long time.
The aim of the SDLC process is product-related. Its goal is to create a product that is high-quality, effective, and cost-efficient. After the product is developed, the SDLC maps the implementation of the software into a live environment. The general methodology of the SDLC typically consists of analysis (of both design and specific requirements), construction, testing, release, and then, maintenance. As you can see, the focus is on the software or product. The SDLC is most commonly implemented using an Agile or Waterfall approach.

Good IT Service Management is about knowing how to integrate these factors into your development process, and this is where ITIL comes in. It covers the entire development lifecycle, from identifying requirements from a business and IT perspective, to designing and creating the solution, to delivering and maintaining the service in a state of continual review and improvement.
You also need to keep your career goals in mind when selecting an ITIL foundation certification course. This training is necessary if you have an interest in managing the IT services for any type of business. Additionally, this course can lead the way into further certifications as well, if you have an interest in expanding your skill set even more.

For successful adoption of ITIL for your service desk, all the stakeholders need to be on the same page, speak the same language, work towards the same goals by succeeding in iterative and incremental projects. As David Moskowitz puts it, “Adopting ITIL involves a learning process as continual improvement is applied”. A certification indicates that you’re learning, and the knowledge is just a minor component of a successful adoption (or a career in ITSM). Click To Tweet
As ITIL 4 incorporates much of the content from ITIL V3, any existing investments in ITIL are protected. However, ITIL 4 builds on the current content and highlights the importance of working holistically and collaboratively to successfully deliver products and services. It provides an invaluable digital operating model that offers practical support for emerging technologies, such as AI and robotics.

However, ITIL certification is different. Having an ITIL certification doesn’t make us an ‘expert’ for any specific skill set. As you might already be aware, ITIL is a set of best practices and is descriptive in nature. Hence an ITIL certification isn’t about doing your job, but merely about knowing the ITIL principles. In fact, that’s precisely the reason why AXELOS have now added the ITIL Practitioner level which makes it mandatory for IT folks to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.
For years now, ITIL (formerly known as the IT Infrastructure Library) has remained the cornerstone and industry-standard best practice framework for supporting, managing and aligning IT Service Management with the needs of the business. Trademarked by AXELOS, ITIL acts as a governing agent for IT, and uses the ITIL Service Lifecycle to map the entire journey from customer needs and requirements all the way through continual improvement of services.
The IT Infrastructure Library® (ITIL®) is the world's most adopted and widely-recognised approach to IT Service Management (ITSM). ITIL training exists to support the needs of a business environment. It enables you to reduce your IT costs while delivering better services, by improving the way teams interact and manage your business' IT infrastructure. Used and adapted by industry-leading brands such as Hewlett-Packard, IBM, NASA, British Airways and The Walt Disney Company, studying ITIL can provide many proven benefits.

Split over several levels and modules, ITIL covers everything from service strategies to continuous improvement, enabling practitioners to not only adapt IT service infrastructures, but also prepare for further changes down the line. This can help to foster sustainable productivity for businesses and create a better, more consistent experience for customers.
Service-level management provides for continual identification, monitoring and review of the levels of IT services specified in the service-level agreements (SLAs). Service-level management ensures that arrangements are in place with internal IT support-providers and external suppliers in the form of operational level agreements (OLAs) and underpinning contracts (UCs), respectively. The process involves assessing the impact of change on service quality and SLAs. The service-level management process is in close relation with the operational processes to control their activities. The central role of service-level management makes it the natural place for metrics to be established and monitored against a benchmark.

Service Strategy: This phase focuses on defining services as strategic assets, and then maintaining and implementing a coherent, deliberate strategy. Service strategy principles address business processes, corporate governance and compliance, policies, corporate culture and decision-making, and ensure that the business is geared for service improvement.

DevOps, an emerging framework which focus on continuous integration and delivery of software. It recognizes that the relationship between developer team and operations team is broken and fills in the gap to promote trust between two teams.[44] This solves the gap that ITIL framework creates—teams working in silo where they possess a "not my issues" attitude.[45]

The Service Design (SD) volume[23] provides good-practice guidance on the design of IT services, processes, and other aspects of the service management effort. Significantly, design within ITIL is understood to encompass all elements relevant to technology service delivery, rather than focusing solely on design of the technology itself. As such, service design addresses how a planned service solution interacts with the larger business and technical environments, service management systems required to support the service, processes which interact with the service, technology, and architecture required to support the service, and the supply chain required to support the planned service. Within ITIL, design work for an IT service is aggregated into a single Service Design Package (SDP). Service design packages, along with other information about services, are managed within the service catalogues.
An event may indicate that something is not functioning correctly, leading to an incident being logged. Events may also indicate normal activity, or a need for routine intervention such as changing a tape. Event management depends on monitoring, but it is different. Event management generates and detects notifications, while monitoring checks the status of components even when no events are occurring. Events may be detected by a CI sending a message, or by a management tool polling the CI. After an event has been detected it may lead to an Incident, Problem or Change, or it may simply be logged in case the information is needed. Response to an event may be automated or may require manual intervention. If actions are needed then a trigger, such as an SMS message or an incident being automatically logged, can alert support staff.

ITIL® (IT Infrastructure Library) offers best practice techniques for the optimisation of IT services. Essentially, ITIL® assists organisations in coordinating their IT requirements with business goals. ITIL® methodology is implemented worldwide, as it is the global standard for IT service management, thus it is a widely adopted and trusted procedure.
ITIL® Foundation has no prerequisite, but every certification afterwards does. ITIL® Practitioner and the ITIL® Intermediates have a prerequisite of ITIL® Foundation. Those taking the ITIL® MALC exam must hold ITIL® Foundation certification and have gained 17 credits throughout the ITIL® scheme by studying ITIL® Foundation and a selection of ITIL® Intermediate qualifications.
