While you can certainly study up or apply ITIL principles and practices in your own company, you can also pursue official ITIL certifications, which indicate familiarity, knowledge, and even mastery of ITIL principles put into practice. Importantly, ITIL certifications are available only to individuals, not to an entire organization. For instance, if a company claims they are ITIL certified, they may in fact comply with a related, but different, standard of the ISO/IEC 20000, or they may simply be promoting any number of employees within the company do hold ITIL certifications.

If you are convinced you have gone as far as you’d like to go with ITIL®, there are a number of options for what to study next. If you’d like to enter the world of project management, you could study PRINCE2® Foundation. As ITIL® and PRINCE2® are both AXELOS products, they complement each other and are designed to work together. In larger organisations and at the enterprise level, COBIT is a good complement to ITIL® because it provides a structure for effective IT governance with a broader scope of coverage. DevOps and ITIL® is also a combination worth looking at. The two approaches, although quite different in some ways, both seek to deliver the same goal: value to the business by focusing on the customer.
Think about the digital services that you use on a daily basis. These were not developed in a vacuum; rather, they were built using an ongoing project management process that took into account not only the objectives of the service, but also the potential issues in developing, delivering and maintaining it. In short, there would have been a huge number of factors to consider.

The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework has become the standard in IT Service Management across the globe. ITIL helps all organizations, regardless of their industry or business sector, provide their IT services using the most efficient and economical methods. The framework focuses on IT Service Management best practices and efficient operations, and is used in government, commercial, and non-profit organizations, alike.
This official ITIL Foundation certification course provides you with a general overview of the IT Service Management Lifecycle which is outlined in ITIL’s five core books – Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation and Continual Service Improvement. ITIL’s “service lifecycle” consists of 26 processes and four functions.
Organizations are becoming increasingly dependent on corporate IT services in order to satisfy their corporate objectives and to meet their business needs. This leads to an increased requirement for high quality IT services for organizations to maintain their competitive advantage. To mitigate those issues, ITIL provides a cohesive set of best practices, drawn from the public and private sectors worldwide.
Good IT Service Management is about knowing how to integrate these factors into your development process, and this is where ITIL comes in. It covers the entire development lifecycle, from identifying requirements from a business and IT perspective, to designing and creating the solution, to delivering and maintaining the service in a state of continual review and improvement.
Are you planning to buy an ITIL Study Guide? If you have not factored the cost of an ITIL course, you may want to do self-study using a study guide. For ITIL 4 Foundation, attending ITIL training is not mandatory. Hence, add the cost related to self-study to the ITIL certification cost. A popular paperback edition may cost you over $30 while again a soft copy may bring down your ITIL Certification Cost.
Continuous Service Improvement: This phase defines new requirements for the preceding phases of ITIL based on operational feedback and service levels. It helps to ensure that policies and procedures are followed, that service level agreements are met and that operational lessons learned are incorporated into existing and future service refinements.

The British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA) used ITIL as the basis for their development of Framework for ICT Technical Support (FITS). Their aim was to develop a framework appropriate for British schools, which often have very small IT departments. FITS became independent from BECTA in 2009 and is now maintained and supported by The FITS Foundation. FITS is now used in excess of a thousand schools in the UK, Australia and Norway as the standard for ICT Service Management in the Education sector (Video: What people are saying)

Be aware that ITIL uses a credit system for the Foundation through Expert levels, in which each certification earns a certain number of credits. Ultimately, a total of 22 credits is required to achieve ITIL Expert certification. (The ITIL Master has its own set of requirements, which you'll read about shortly). The following graphic shows the structure of that certification scheme and its corresponding credits.
ICT design and planning provides a framework and approach for the strategic and technical design and planning of ICT infrastructures. It includes the necessary combination of business (and overall IS) strategy, with technical design and architecture. ICT design and planning drives both the procurement of new ICT solutions through the production of statements of requirement ("SOR") and invitations to tender ("ITT") and is responsible for the initiation and management of ICT Programmes for strategic business change. Key outputs from design and planning are:
Let’s get this straight – getting a certification is not rocket science in today’s day and age. A certification merely demonstrates that you’ve studied and cleared an examination. It doesn’t give you wings and doesn’t solve all the world’s problems. One of the primary reasons why certifications and other training programs are losing their relevance is that it’s possible to pass the certification and still not learn ANYTHING practical about the subject.
