Closely related to the architectural criticism, ITIL does not directly address the business applications which run on the IT infrastructure; nor does it facilitate a more collaborative working relationship between development and operations teams. The trend toward a closer working relationship between development and operations is termed: DevOps. This trend is related to increased application release rates and the adoption of agile software development methodologies. Traditional service management processes have struggled to support increased application release rates – due to lack of automation – and/or highly complex enterprise architecture.
Starting in 2009,[62] the APM Group, UK, established an ITIL Software Scheme (ISS) which allows IT Service Management software ITSM tool vendors to obtain endorsement through the Cabinet Office for an ITIL-based tool. This endorsement allows vendors to hold a valid ISS trademark licence and use the process compliant ITIL ‘swirl’ logo at a bronze, silver or gold level.
A summary of changes has been published by the UK Government. In line with the 2007 edition, the 2011 edition consists of five core publications – Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation, and Continual Service Improvement. ITIL 2011 is an update to the ITIL framework that addresses significant additional guidance with the definition of formal processes which were previously implied but not identified, as well as correction of errors and inconsistencies.

Master: the ultimate ITIL certification, a candidate must demonstrate ITIL mastery by completing Expert certification (22 credits minimum), demonstrating minimum 5 years’ experience in a management or leadership role, submitting a proposal for ITIL service improvement, submitting a work package wherein the candidate successfully applied ITIL practices to a real-world business case, and completing an interview with an ITIL assessment panel.
As Paul Wilkinson points out here, nearly 85% of folks he meets have undergone ITIL training (out of 15,000 people).  Only 2% of these folks measure the impact in terms of cost, value, risks and other outcomes of their IT initiatives. This is one of the primary reasons why ITIL certified companies don’t get the desired results or an ROI for the cost spent on getting their folks ITIL certified.
A candidate for ITIL certification may choose from certification providers who are accredited by AXELOS for providing the training and examinations. Non-accredited providers may cost less, but their content and results may not be as reliable or vouched for. Pricing varies depending on country you reside and whether you’re taking an in-person course, online option, or an in-house training within your company. Candidacy for the Master-level certification alone is $4,000.

We’ve already discussed why ITIL is critical in today’s IT environment, and why it’s still widely adopted among many IT organizations of all sizes. For these reasons, it’s important that employees within these organizations have a deep understanding of ITIL’s foundations in order to achieve maximum benefits from its implementation. Knowledge and mastery of ITIL is so important in fact, that many organizations are even investing in certification sponsorship programs to help employees get ITIL certified.
FitSM [43] is a standard for lightweight service management. Its process framework is quite similar to that of ISO/IEC 20000 and the Service Support and Service Delivery parts of ITIL Version 2, but adopts Service Portfolio Management from later ITIL versions. FitSM contains several parts, including samples and templates for core ITSM documents, that are published under Creative Common licenses.
The British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA) used ITIL as the basis for their development of Framework for ICT Technical Support (FITS). Their aim was to develop a framework appropriate for British schools, which often have very small IT departments. FITS became independent from BECTA in 2009 and is now maintained and supported by The FITS Foundation. ITIL certification is split into five stages, namely foundation, practitioner, intermediate, expert and master levels. Each of these levels has different requirements for appearing, clearing and is awarded a specific set of credits. For instance, one needs to have a total of 22 credits to be certified as an expert. Apart from these, there are complementary certifications that help you reach the expert level faster. Here’s an overview of the various levels and credits. 
Prior to taking any of the ITIL exams, you should be able to pass any of the sample ITIL exams that are available online. A list of online ITIL sample exams can be found here; updated as of 2014. Professional ITIL exam preparation kits can also be found online, for a fee. ITIL Prime, for example, offers access to more than 800 ITIL Foundation questions for $59.
ITIL Intermediate Capability Badge (Burgundy). There are four ITIL Capability courses. (RCV, OSA, SOA, PPO). You are able to apply for this lapel pin once you have passed each exam. Some examination institutes such as APMG International will send the pins automatically with the candidate's certificate. This badge shares its colour with the ITIL Service Transition book.
BCS Specialist Qualifications in IT Service Management covers a broad range of industry practices including ITIL, COBIT, ISO/IEC 20000 and SFIA/SFIA. Six BCS-ISEB Specialist Qualifications are available: Specialist Certificate in Service Desk and Incident Management, Specialist Certificate in Change Management, Specialist Certificate in Service Level Management, Specialist Certificate in Business Relationship Management, Specialist Certificate in Problem Management and Specialist Certificate in Supplier Management. Each certificate earns 1.5 credits.

IT Financial Management comprises the discipline of ensuring the IT infrastructure is obtained at the most effective price (which does not necessarily mean cheapest) and calculating the cost of providing IT services so an organization can understand the costs of its IT services. These costs may then be recovered from the customer of the service. This is the second component of the service delivery process.
