This official ITIL Foundation certification course provides you with a general overview of the IT Service Management Lifecycle which is outlined in ITIL’s five core books – Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation and Continual Service Improvement. Continual service improvement, defined in the ITIL continual service improvement volume,[26] aims to align and realign IT services to changing business needs by identifying and implementing improvements to the IT services that support the business processes. Just like achieving an ITIL certification provides higher paying job opportunities and bolsters a resume, the expertise gained will also often give you more options in terms of job roles within the organization. Candidates with proficiencies in any of the upper-level ITIL courses will have their pick of the litter right away when it comes to where they want to go and what they want to do. So often in IT, employees must “pay their dues” so to speak, and settle on low-level roles or contractor positions until they prove themselves and showcase the knowledge and skillset required for more lucrative opportunities. Master: the ultimate ITIL certification, a candidate must demonstrate ITIL mastery by completing Expert certification (22 credits minimum), demonstrating minimum 5 years’ experience in a management or leadership role, submitting a proposal for ITIL service improvement, submitting a work package wherein the candidate successfully applied ITIL practices to a real-world business case, and completing an interview with an ITIL assessment panel.
So, is it worth the buck? Definitely yes, if you’re able to demonstrate the value of your knowledge in your work. Having spoken to a sizeable number of IT consultants, practitioners, IT agents, I have seen that people who succeed with an ITIL certification are those who have put an effort into earning their certificate, and not just seen it as a way of checking a box for their career. ITSM is regarded by the application owners as the recovery of the IT infrastructure used to deliver IT services, but as of 2009 many businesses practice the much further-reaching process of business continuity planning (BCP), to ensure that the whole end-to-end business process can continue should a serious incident occur (at primary support level).
Closely related to the architectural criticism, ITIL does not directly address the business applications which run on the IT infrastructure; nor does it facilitate a more collaborative working relationship between development and operations teams. The trend toward a closer working relationship between development and operations is termed: DevOps. This trend is related to increased application release rates and the adoption of agile software development methodologies. Traditional service management processes have struggled to support increased application release rates – due to lack of automation – and/or highly complex enterprise architecture.

We’ve already discussed why ITIL is critical in today’s IT environment, and why it’s still widely adopted among many IT organizations of all sizes. The aim of the SDLC process is product-related. Its goal is to create a product that is high-quality, effective, and cost-efficient. After the product is developed, the SDLC maps the implementation of the software into a live environment. The general methodology of the SDLC typically consists of analysis (of both design and specific requirements), construction, testing, release, and then, maintenance. As you can see, the focus is on the software or product. The SDLC is most commonly implemented using an Agile or Waterfall approach.

During this ITIL® Foundation training course, delegates will become familiar with key ITIL® terminology, understand the link between processes and the lifecycle, and will be able to explain service management as a practice. This course will cover the phases of the Service Lifecycle, which provide a sufficient overview of the alliance between IT and business strategy.
Service Strategy: This phase focuses on defining services as strategic assets, and then maintaining and implementing a coherent, deliberate strategy. Service strategy principles address business processes, corporate governance and compliance, policies, corporate culture and decision-making, and ensure that the business is geared for service improvement.
ITIL Intermediate: There are two streams in the Intermediate level: the Service Lifecycle Stream and the Service Capability Stream. You can opt to take individual modules within this level, however, if you wish to progress through the ITIL qualification scheme you will need to earn a minimum of 17 credits (two credits must be earned from Foundation) before you can take the Managing across the Lifecycle module and exam. By passing this, you will achieve a total of 22 credits, which you can use towards the ITIL Expert level of certification.

In addition to exam preparation and practice quizzes, you'll engage in round-table discussions, group exercises, and games designed to give practical context to the concepts. The Business Process Framework (eTOM) published by the TeleManagement Forum offers a framework aimed at telecommunications service providers. In a joined effort, TM Forum and itSMF developed an Application Note to eTOM (GB921) that shows how the two frameworks can be mapped to each other.
