The ITIL Practitioner certification is the newest entry to the ITIL certification scheme. This exam was offered for the first time in February 2016. As the name implies, the ITIL Practitioner certification is based on practical knowledge of ITIL processes and how those principles are implemented in the real world. Lifecycle may be more suited to those with managerial responsibility looking at the overall IT Service Management picture. So, is it worth the buck? Definitely yes, if you’re able to demonstrate the value of your knowledge in your work. Having spoken to a sizeable number of IT consultants, practitioners, IT agents, I have seen that people who succeed with an ITIL certification are those who have put an effort into earning their certificate, and not just seen it as a way of checking a box for their career. Your goal should be acquiring knowledge and putting it in practice, measuring the impact of your work and not just ‘passing’ the certification.

The service portfolio contains information about the performance of investments in services the service provider manages on behalf of the business. The service portfolio comprises: the pipeline section, which contains the services that are yet to be offered; the service catalogue section, which contains the details of operational services; and the retired section, which contains details of the services that are no longer offered.
The aim of the SDLC process is product-related. Its goal is to create a product that is high-quality, effective, and cost-efficient. After the product is developed, the SDLC maps the implementation of the software into a live environment. The general methodology of the SDLC typically consists of analysis (of both design and specific requirements), construction, testing, release, and then, maintenance. As you can see, the focus is on the software or product. The SDLC is most commonly implemented using an Agile or Waterfall approach.

ITIL describes processes, procedures, tasks, and checklists which are not organization-specific nor technology-specific, but can be applied by an organization for establishing integration with the organization's strategy, delivering value, and maintaining a minimum level of competency. It allows the organization to establish a baseline from which it can plan, implement, and measure. It is used to demonstrate compliance and to measure improvement. There is no formal independent third party compliance assessment available for ITIL compliance in an organisation. Certification in ITIL is only available to individuals.

The new ITIL 4 Foundation which is an update from ITIL v3/2011 was launched on 18 February 2019. ITIL 4 is a new certification scheme that will slowly replace the existing scheme it is based on the transformation to a digital environment. It is designed to offer a clearer career path for professionals from Foundation to higher levels. There is no Bridge exam for current ITIL Foundation holders to ITIL 4 Foundation. Candidates who hold the current ITIL Foundation will need to take the ITIL 4 Foundation to be certified in the new scheme or they would need to accumulate 17 ITIL v3 credits and then take the transition module.

Although the certification covers all the five practice areas of the ITIL service lifecycle, including how the different lifecycle stages are linked to one another, an IT pro who completes the ITIL Foundation level will likely need to complete the Practitioner or Intermediate certification before being able to qualify for service management positions.
For successful adoption of ITIL for your service desk, all the stakeholders need to be on the same page, speak the same language, work towards the same goals by succeeding in iterative and incremental projects. As David Moskowitz puts it, “Adopting ITIL involves a learning process as continual improvement is applied”. Achieving an ITIL certification at any of the more advanced levels will give you a demonstrable advantage over other candidates in a job hiring scenario. Not only does it prove to employers that you are highly skilled and educated in industry best practices, but it will also make their investment in you more lucrative as you’ll be able to breeze through the training process and provide value from the day you’re brought on board. Although becoming ITIL certified may cost you a pretty penny up front, the long-term advantages for job growth may be worth the costs.
Many times in your career, it can be a good thing to take a step back and re-evaluate some of your goals and current efforts to see if you need to make any moves or decisions that will affect you in the long-term. Investments like going for a Master’s degree or getting a certification can be scary, because you often just don’t know if you risk wasting time and effort on something that may not be all the beneficial to you in long-run of your professional career.
