ITIL is underpinned by a comprehensive, structured and well managed qualifications scheme.

The ITIL Version 3 (V3) Qualifications scheme provides a modular approach to ITIL certification, and is comprised of a series of certifications focused on different aspects of ITIL Best Practice, to various degrees of depth and detail.

There are four levels of certification within the V3 scheme:

  1. ITIL V3 Foundation in IT Service Management
  2. ITIL Intermediate Level - Service Lifecycle / Service Capability Streams
  3. ITIL V3 Expert Certificate
  4. ITIL V3 Master Qualification

Each training course has a defined syllabus which is strictly adhered to in officially accredited courseware, such as the online training provided on this learning portal.
The APMG Group, as the custodians of ITIL, manage both the ITIL qualifications scheme and the accredited training organisations (ATOs) for ITIL. All examination institutes (EIs) and accredited training organisations adhere to the strict standards that exist to ensure that you only learn from the official syllabi and you can gain assurance that the training materials and final exams will be professionally provided and managed.

To recognize the candidate investment in ITIL certifications from both the V3 program, earlier ITIL qualification schemes (V1 and V2), and certifications endorsed as Complementary Qualifications, a credit system has been introduced to support the ITIL V3 scheme. Within the ITIL Credit System, all ITIL and ITIL related qualifications have been assigned with a specific credit value, based upon the content of ITIL V3 material which is covered by the qualification. Upon successful completion of any module of ITIL study recognized under the system, a candidate will be rewarded with both the certification and the attributed credits.

ITIL Qualification Scheme

The credits earned through this V3 Credit System (shown above in yellow) can be used by candidates who are interested in achieving the ITIL V3 Expert Level of certification, which requires candidates to meet a specific set of key requirements, which include earning a required number of credits (22 in total) from qualifications which cover the full spectrum of ITIL V3 Best Practice.

The ITIL V3 Foundation is worth 1.5 credits whereas the ITIL V2-V3 Foundation Bridge is worth 0.5 credits. The ITIL Intermediate Lifecycle courses are all worth 3 credits each, with the ITIL Intermediate Capability courses all worth 4 credits each.

The final course that must be taken in the step towards ITIL V3 Expert is called, Managing Across the Lifecycle. This capstone course is worth a total of 5 credits.

Once a candidate has obtained a total of 22 credits, then the ITIL V3 Expert in IT Service Management can be awarded.
