ITIL® Foundation has no prerequisite, but every certification afterwards does. ITIL® Practitioner and the ITIL® Intermediates have a prerequisite of ITIL® Foundation. Those taking the ITIL® MALC exam must hold ITIL® Foundation certification and have gained 17 credits throughout the ITIL® scheme by studying ITIL® Foundation and a selection of ITIL® Intermediate qualifications.
All said and done, you will have a better chance of catching an employers attention if you have an ITIL certification. In fact, ITIL certification is used as a basic filter by many employers to weed out candidates. But does that guarantee you a job? Probably not. A good experience, backed by a stellar demonstration of skills gained via certification is going to better equip you for the challenges your work life throws at you. Echoing the same statement, Stuart Rance of Optimal service management adds that
No temporary workers or subcontractors here. Our trainers are working consultants who implement best practice processes and tools when they're not in the classroom. You might say we practice what we preach. It's a great system, when you think about it - we're better consultants because we know these concepts inside and out, and we're better trainers because we get to put the theory into practice in the real world.
In 2006, however, the OGC, which owned the ITIL trademark, turned over the management of the ITIL trademark and the accreditation of examination providers to the APM Group. The APMG then contracted with EXIN, BCS/ISEB, Loyalist Certification Services, PeopleCert Group and other certification bodies, accrediting them as the official examination bodies.

Bottom-line is everything right? If on-site sponsorship opportunities aren’t available to you, it’s still well worth the investment to pursue an ITIL v3 certification on your own time. Not only will you be boosting your resume and providing more value to the business, but you’ll potentially receive more lucrative job opportunities as well. ITIL is listed as one of Techopedia’s highest paying IT certifications, and it’s not uncommon for certified ITIL program managers and IT architects to make well over six figures in their respective salaries. Now that’s a lot of moolah!
FitSM [43] is a standard for lightweight service management. Its process framework is quite similar to that of ISO/IEC 20000 and the Service Support and Service Delivery parts of ITIL Version 2, but adopts Service Portfolio Management from later ITIL versions. FitSM contains several parts, including samples and templates for core ITSM documents, that are published under Creative Common licenses.
CSI needs upfront planning, training and awareness, ongoing scheduling, roles created, ownership assigned, and activities identified to be successful. CSI must be planned and scheduled as process with defined activities, inputs, outputs, roles and reporting. Continual Service Improvement and Application Performance Management (APM) are two sides of the same coin. They both focus on improvement with APM tying together service design, service transition, and service operation which in turn helps raise the bar of operational excellence for IT.[31]

Think about the digital services that you use on a daily basis. These were not developed in a vacuum; rather, they were built using an ongoing project management process that took into account not only the objectives of the service, but also the potential issues in developing, delivering and maintaining it. In short, there would have been a huge number of factors to consider.
ITSM is regarded by the application owners as the recovery of the IT infrastructure used to deliver IT services, but as of 2009 many businesses practice the much further-reaching process of business continuity planning (BCP), to ensure that the whole end-to-end business process can continue should a serious incident occur (at primary support level).
In July 2013, ownership of ITIL was transferred to AXELOS, which maintains the ITIL framework and accredits training and examination institutes. Hundreds of ITIL Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) are available to deliver training, and ITIL certification exams are administered at the end of a training course or by an Examination Institute (EI), many of which work directly with the ATOs.

Continual service improvement, defined in the ITIL continual service improvement volume,[26] aims to align and realign IT services to changing business needs by identifying and implementing improvements to the IT services that support the business processes. It incorporates many of the same concepts articulated in the Deming Cycle of Plan-Do-Check-Act. The perspective of CSI on improvement is the business perspective of service quality, even though CSI aims to improve process effectiveness, efficiency and cost effectiveness of the IT processes through the whole lifecycle. To manage improvement, CSI should clearly define what should be controlled and measured.
Let’s get this straight – getting a certification is not rocket science in today’s day and age. A certification merely demonstrates that you’ve studied and cleared an examination. It doesn’t give you wings and doesn’t solve all the world’s problems. One of the primary reasons why certifications and other training programs are losing their relevance is that it’s possible to pass the certification and still not learn ANYTHING practical about the subject.
So, is it worth the buck? Definitely yes, if you’re able to demonstrate the value of your knowledge in your work. Having spoken to a sizeable number of IT consultants, practitioners, IT agents, I have seen that people who succeed with an ITIL certification are those who have put an effort into earning their certificate, and not just seen it as a way of checking a box for their career. Your goal should be acquiring knowledge and putting it in practice, measuring the impact of your work and not just ‘passing’ the certification.

The service portfolio contains information about the performance of investments in services the service provider manages on behalf of the business. The service portfolio comprises: the pipeline section, which contains the services that are yet to be offered; the service catalogue section, which contains the details of operational services; and the retired section, which contains details of the services that are no longer offered.
DevOps, an emerging framework which focus on continuous integration and delivery of software. It recognizes that the relationship between developer team and operations team is broken and fills in the gap to promote trust between two teams.[44] This solves the gap that ITIL framework creates—teams working in silo where they possess a "not my issues" attitude.[45]
